Our Creators Residency is a focused week exploring collaborative devising, story structure, and the physical ensemble.
Includes:
• Narrative frameworks (Hero’s Journey)
• Non-verbal storytelling techniques
• Image-based creation using light/music/objects
• Support in developing original productions from concept to stage
Outcome: A 30 minute collaborative sharing and a comprehensive toolkit to devising and physical theatre

Explore the world of internationally acclaimed physical theatre company Temper Theatre with their unique 5 day creative residency, led by the company Artistic Director Finn Morrell. This residency is designed to empower artists, directors, theatre companies, actors, dancers and physical performers to deepen their creative practice and explore unusual and exciting ensemble storytelling techniques. Participants will learn Temper's fundamental framework for creating narrative through understanding character and conflict whilst collaborating in an ensemble to create highly visual and emotionally charged physical sequences as a way of telling meaningful stories.
BLUEPRINTS
Experiment with various techniques to generate dynamic movement based 'blueprints' which serve as the foundation for weaving captivating narratives. Discover new ways to push the boundaries of movement, and unravel fresh perspectives on the interplay between movement and storytelling.
'MAKING A HERO'
Crafting an unforgettable character requires an approach to storytelling that encapsulates the essential essence of the human condition. By delving into 'The Hero's Journey participants will explore ways to structure a compelling narrative that captures the imagination of their audience and reflects the complexities of life.
'AMALGAMATE'
Enhance your work by infusing it with playful creativity and originality. Explore the different ways that using costumes, props, light and sound can be used to craft unique ways of exploring metaphor and telling stories.Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with fusing, clashing, and weaving these sequences together before presenting their work in a sharing at the end of the week that will be captured on high quality film.

Temper Theatre are delighted to host our first INCUBATOR RESIDENCY of 2026 with Internationally acclaimed British Theatre Director Rich Rusk. An intensive making space for bold ideas, experimental process, and fearless storytelling.
Fresh off the back of directing the award-winning Metamorphosis in Shanghai, international theatre director Rich Rusk invites you into a one-of-a-kind residency: a 5-day incubator for directors, theatre-makers, and interdisciplinary storytellers ready to create, clarify, and evolve their work.Rich has been a core mentor and creative ally to Temper Theatre since its founding in 2014, supporting the company’s growth, strategy, and devising practice. Most recently, he joined as Associate Director on Temper’s critically acclaimed production HOME, touring the UK and China in 2024.
This December edition will focus on devising, theatre-making, company development, and adaptation, exploring how to take existing plays and reimagine them for contemporary audiences. Rich has adapted and directed works including Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Metamorphosis, and Peer Gynt, blending physical theatre and classic literature into vivid, emotionally charged performance.
As a former Associate Director for Gecko (Missing, Institute, Time of Your Life, The Dreamer) and an international director working extensively across the UK and Asia, Rich offers insight drawn from 20 years of mistakes, little victories, problem-solving, streamlining, and opening shows, from pub theaters to 2,000-seat grand stages, and everything in between

We’re very excited to announce our first international residency! We are now accepting applications for our five day residency in Shanghai, China. Hosted by THEATRE YOUNG and led by our company Director Finn Morrell, participants will have the opportunity to dive into the world of physical theatre and devising and explore Tempers creative framework for creating original stories.
